New study: Xarelto bleeding risk greater than competing blood thinners

Schmidt National Law Group now accepting cases

Schmidt National Law Group

Patients taking Xarelto at 20% increased risk for GI bleeds compared to Eliquis, Pradaxa

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, USA, January 26, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — A new study by the Mayo Clinic shows the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is higher for patients taking Xarelto compared to other drugs in its class.

The study, published online Dec. 31 in the journal Gastroenterology, compared the GI safety profile of three rival oral anticoagulants: Xarelto (rivaroxaban), Pradaxa (dabigatran) and Eliquis (apixaban).

Xarelto, Pradaxa and Eliquis are new-generation blood thinners used to prevent blood clots, often in patients with the heart rhythm disorder atrial fibrillation.

The study used data from both privately insured patients and Medicare Advantage patients to compare the medications’ safety profiles when it comes to GI bleeding. All of the patients had atrial fibrillation and had used one of the three blood thinners between October 2010 and February 2015.

Researchers found that GI bleeding occurred more frequently in patients taking Xarelto compared to Pradaxa, with a roughly 20% increased risk, while Eliquis had the lowest GI bleeding risk of the three medications.

Patients were most likely to suffer from a GI bleed within 90 days of starting either Xarelto or Eliquis and within 120 days of starting Pradaxa.

The risk of GI bleeds also increased with age. Patients over the age of 75 were at an increased risk for GI bleeds compared to patients younger than 75.

The study authors concluded that Eliquis had the most favorable GI safety profile, even among very elderly patients, and Xarelto had the least favorable.

Why is this important?

Blood thinners like Xarelto work to stop blood from clotting inside the body. This helps prevent dangerous blood clots, such as those that cause strokes and heart attacks, from forming.

It also means that these medications have the potential to cause serious and uncontrollable bleeding.

There is currently no antidote to stop a Xarelto bleeding episode, unlike the traditional blood thinner warfarin and even the novel oral anticoagulant Pradaxa. (An antidote for Pradaxa was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2015.)

Patients who suffer a bleed while taking Xarelto are at risk of bleeding to death because there is no approved antidote to stop it.

Xarelto has been associated with an increased risk for not only GI bleeds, but also brain bleeds and rectal bleeds.

There are nearly 15,000 lawsuits against the maker of Xarelto — Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals — pending in a multidistrict litigation in Louisiana federal court. The lawsuits accuse Janssen of designing a defective product and failing to disclose its potential risks to the public.

Xarelto patients who experience side effects like uncontrollable bleeding may be able to file lawsuits of their own.

Schmidt National Law Group is currently seeking claimants and is in the process of filing claims related to Xarelto and uncontrollable bleeding. Contact us today at 1-800-214-1010 or visit our website to learn more.

Prominent Int'l Lawyer Calls his Colleagues to Sign TGTE’s challenge at the UN Against Sri Lanka’s 6th Amendment

Prof Boyle at International Court of Justice

TRANSNATIONAL GOVERNMENT OF TAMIL EELAM (TGTE)'s SIXTH AMENDMENT INITIATIVE AN IMPORTANT STEP TO EELAM TAMILS’ SELF DETERMINATION

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA, January 26, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ —

Prominent International Human Rights lawyer, Professor Francis Boyle of the University of Illinois in the United States of America, signed the Petition today demonstrating his legal representation and solidarity to the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) initiative of challenging the 6thAmendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution. The petition challenges the 6th Amendment, which criminalizes peaceful advocacy for an independent state in Sri Lanka,as a violation of the Tamil people’s freedom of speech and freedom of conscience.

Professor Boyle won two Orders from the International Court of Justice (the World Court of the United Nations System) overwhelmingly in favor of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina against Yugoslavia to cease and desist from committing all acts of genocide against the Bosnians in violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention.

He also convinced the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia to indict Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic for every crime in the ICTY Statute, including two counts of genocide: (1) genocide for the Srebrenica Massacre; and (2) genocide against Bosnia in general.

He is the author of several books on self-determination and genocide among others. He has presented many papers and booklets on the Tamil national conflict the latest of these being a book titled ‘The Tamil Genocide by Sri Lanka: The Global Failure to Protect Tamil Rights under International Law’ published first in 2009”.

While signing the TGTE’s communication to be filed with the UN Human Rights Committee Professor Boyle quoted Article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, a treaty to which Sri Lanka is a party, and stated ‘all peoples have the right to self-determination and that includes the Eelam Tamils’.

‘The right to self-determination for the Eelam Tamils is at stake here and that is certainly why I am going to sign and why I would encourage all my legal colleagues to sign. This is an extremely important initiative, a breakthrough initiative, and I think everyone has to be behind it. And so now I will sign this Petition and I would encourage you to do so’ said Boyle, as concluded the signing ceremony.

ABOUT TRANSNATIONAL GOVERNMENT OF TAMIL EELAM (TGTE):

Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) is a democratically elected Government of a million strong Tamils (from the island of Sri Lanka) living in several countries around the world. TGTE was formed after the mass killing of Tamils by the Sri Lankan Government in 2009.

TGTE twice held internationally supervised elections among Tamils around the world to elect 132 Members of Parliament. It has a bicameral legislature and a Cabinet. It held its Parliamentary sittings among other places in the British and French Parliaments.

TGTE is leading a campaign to realize Tamils’ political aspirations through peaceful, democratic and diplomatic means. The Constitution of the TGTE mandates that it should realize its political objective only through peaceful means.

The Prime Minister of TGTE is Mr. Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran, a New York based lawyer.

Contact: pmo@tgte.org
Web: www.tgte-us.org

BACKGROUND:

Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka faced repeated mass killings in 1958, 1977, and 1983 and the mass killings in 2009 prompted UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to appoint a Panel of Experts to report on the scale of the killings.

According to UN internal review report on Sri Lanka, over 70,000 Tamils were killed in five months in early 2009 and Tamil women were raped by the Sri Lankan Security forces. There are over 90,000 Tamil war widows and thousands of Tamils disappeared due the conflict.

According to this UN report, the killings and other abuses that took place amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. Independent experts believe that there are elements of these abuses that constitute an act of genocide.

Members of the Sri Lankan security forces are almost exclusively from the Sinhalese community and the victims are all from the Tamil community.

A Buddhist Monk shot and killed a Sri Lankan Prime Minister 1959 for having talks with Tamil political leaders.

Tamils overwhelmingly voted in a Parliamentary election in 1977 to establish an independent and sovereign country called Tamil Eelam. This Parliamentary election was conducted by the Sri Lankan Government

Brian O'Shea to Teach Journalists How to Detect Hostile Intent and Deception Awareness

Brian O'Shea, CEO of Striker Pierce Investigations will teach Global Journalist Security Students on January 26, 2017 in Maryland.

You are the first and last line of defense…and your 'gut feeling' is something that should never be ignored.”

— -Brian O'Shea , Striker Pierce Investigations

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, USA, January 25, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Brian O'Shea, CEO of Striker Pierce Investigations (with locations in North Carolina, New York, Maryland and Washington DC) will join Frank Smyth and his team of top international instructors at Global Journalist Security during a 5 day course which teaches journalists and media figures how to protect themselves and escape from hostile scenarios that they may encounter in the USA and abroad. Designed for women and men living or working in environments where violent crimes including sexual assault pose an active risk, the two-day ADET workshop includes: situational awareness to avoid becoming a target, use of demeanor and tone of voice to help deter predators, and learning simple, but effective self-defense measures to help de-escalate situations and escape attacks. The course includes emotional self-care both to maintain equilibrium in the moment and to practice self-care afterward. Interested in this course? Contact us for more information.

Mr. O'Shea focuses on body language analysis, base-lining, and hostile intent that you can learn in any social situation to provide yourself early warning of ill-intent from potential sources, local hosts, security forces (overt and undercover) and any other individuals whom a journalist may encounter on the job.

Based on his over 25 years of experience in the intelligence, military, and criminal justice fields, O'Shea brings a unique and all encompassing perspective assessing human interactions and how to turn yourself into a human lie detector. Other applications outside the journalist field include interactions one may encounter on a blind date, in detecting a potential stalker, in determining if an employee may cause a business harm, and even if a competitor is trying to steal secrets.

"Everyone has a motivation, either good or bad. It is up to you to determine what that motivation is. These skills, when applied and practice, can keep you out of a dangerous situation before it is too late," Brian O'Shea stated during a recent counter-stalking presentation to Students for Liberty in Tbilisi in the country of Georgia.

Courses of this nature are available to the public, and are highly encouraged.

"You are the first and last line of defense…and your 'gut feeling' is something that should never be ignored." (Brian O'Shea in a recent conversation with victims of stalking in New York).

Maryland State Youth Soccer Association Launches InjureFree and Preferred Provider Partnership with MedStar Health

InjureFree.com

InjureFree is a web-based care coordination platform for all youth sports injuries, delivering the CDC Heads-Up Concussion Education training modules and tracking completion in real-time.

State youth soccer association uses HIPAA compliant technology to improve medical oversight, while improving access to health care services for families.

These are the same children who go to school and play in other sports programs so by improving care [in MSYSA] … the surrounding communities benefit from the improved access to health care.”

— Charlie Wund, InjureFree

COLUMBIA, MARYLAND, USA, January 25, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — While many organizations struggle to manage the tracking of concussion education delivery, per state mandates, and establishing streamlined communications regarding injured athletes, the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) has taken a momentous step in that direction. This past weekend, MSYSA launched the InjureFree educational delivery and care coordination platform, deploying concussion education for coaches and administrators and beginning to document all athletic related injuries within the Maryland State ODP. The enhanced communication will reduce the administrative burden for administrators and streamline the Return-To-Play process for any athletes who become injured.

As part of the program launch, MSYSA also re-announced the Preferred Provider Partnership with MedStar Sports Medicine that enhances the medical oversight provided to the players of the 2017 Maryland State ODP, while securing access to specialists for all participating players within 24-48 hours of injury. MedStar has dedicated a 1-800 hotline phone number for MSYSA families to ensure fast and easy access to qualified specialists. The original announcement of the relationship was made late last year.

The initial rollout included all Maryland State ODP participants being enrolled in the InjureFree care coordination technology. Additionally, the rollout will extend to the teams participating in the 2017 MSYSA State Cup and 2017 MSYSA Presidents Cup. The ultimate goal is to have the benefits of this comprehensive partnership extended to every player registered with MSYSA over the next five years.

MSYSA Executive Director, Dr. Greg Smith stated, “The entire MSYSA leadership works tirelessly to continually provide the best opportunities for the thousands of soccer players who participate in our programs and with our member clubs and leagues; this dynamic partnership is an example of the wonderful work being done.”
MSYSA is excited to leverage InjureFree’s connectivity by partnering with regional health care experts from MedStar Health. In this partnership, sports medicine clinicians and youth sports researchers will be working with association administrators to appropriately monitor injury trends within the youth sports population.

InjureFree CEO Charlie Wund commented, “Following the successful launch with MSYSA’s ODP, we are excited to begin extending the network to all participating athletes within the state association. These are the same children who go to school and play in other sports programs so by improving the care within MSYSA, we are determined, the surrounding communities will also benefit from the improved access to health care. The MSYSA leadership should be commended for their vision and dedication to the families of Maryland.”

As youth sport associations manage rule changes and state law compliance while providing for a safe playing environment, MSYSA is tapping InjureFree’s ground breaking technology and ability to aggregate data to set a new standard of care for today’s participants. By creating the gold standard of care, MSYSA is working to ensure a positive playing environment for the future.

Taxotere MDL swells to 700-plus lawsuits

Schmidt National Law Group now accepting cases

Schmidt National Law Group

If the nearly 300% surge in Taxotere lawsuits is any indication, many more cases could be filed in the coming months as the litigation moves forward.”

— Schmidt National Law Group

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA , USA , January 25, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — The number of Taxotere hair loss lawsuits skyrocketed between December and January.

The number of cases nearly tripled from just over 260 to more than 700 during the holiday season. This sudden spike comes three months after federal Taxotere lawsuits were consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL).

Taxotere is a chemotherapy drug widely used to treat breast cancer. It is manufactured by the U.S. division of French pharmaceutical company Sanofi.

The drug is highly potent and, like many chemotherapy medications, can lead to hair loss. What makes Taxotere different from other chemotherapy drugs is that sometimes hair loss is permanent.

The Taxotere label used to indicate that roughly 3% of patients could experience permanent alopecia, or permanent hair loss, when using the drug. But studies and surveys have shown that the percentage could be as high as 6% to 16%.

Today, the Taxotere label suggests the frequency of permanent hair loss is “not known.”

Mississippi resident Theresa Snowden is one of the many women who used Taxotere to treat breast cancer and now suffers from permanent hair loss. She filed a lawsuit against Sanofi on Dec. 22 claiming the company designed a defective product and failed to warn about its potential risks.

Theresa was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2013 and was prescribed Taxotere by her oncologist for treatment, according to court documents.

It wasn’t until September 2016 that Theresa learned of the link between Taxotere and permanent hair loss.

Theresa’s lawsuit is one of 705 currently pending in the Eastern District of Louisiana as part of the Taxotere MDL.
If the nearly 300% surge in Taxotere lawsuits is any indication, many more cases could be filed in the coming months as the litigation moves forward.

Taxotere patients who experienced permanent hair loss may be able to file lawsuits of their own.

Schmidt National Law Group is currently seeking claimants and is in the process of filing claims related to Taxotere and permanent hair loss. Contact us today at 1-800-214-1010 or visit our website to learn more.

The case is Snowden vs. Sanofi S.A. et al. (1:16-cv-00440) in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi and In Re: Taxotere (Docetaxel) Products Liability Litigation in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Based on an innovative knowledge hub system originally created for the U.S. intelligence community, Regendus ingests regulatory documents published in the Federal Register, making its contents available for immediate, augmented analysis.

As a technology partner with N&C, IBM invested nearly 5,300 laboratory hours at its Federal Innovations Centers to support development of the Regendus prototype. The solution available today resulted from three years of collaborative innovation, including technical exchanges with the White House and 23 separate federal agencies.

Leveraging IBM’s trailblazing Watson NLP (Natural Language Processing) platform, Regendus provides powerful data mining and visualization tools for rapidly surveying and analyzing the entire federal regulatory environment.
“We recognized the promise of Regendus early on, during our Big Data work together on behalf of the White House,” said Andras Szakal, CTO of IBM US Federal and co-chair of the Federal Big Data Commission.

Davis II, founder and CEO of N&C. “As new regulations are proposed or go into effect daily, Regendus provides regulators — and the regulated — the ability to stay ahead of the entire rulemaking process, saving substantial time and expense.”

IT Governance encourages New York financial institutions to start preparing for cybersecurity regulations

WYOMING, UNITED STATES, January 24, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — IT Governance, the leading provider of cybersecurity and ISO 27001 expertise, is urging New York-based financial institutions to start preparing for cybersecurity regulations.

The statement follows New York State’s Department of Financial Services recent release on the updated cybersecurity proposal, which is due to come into effect on March 1, 2017. The proposed regulation requires all New York financial institutions to implement appropriate security measures to protect themselves from cyber attacks.

The new legislation will require covered entities to submit an annual written certification to the superintendent of financial services in order to demonstrate compliance.

Alan Calder, the founder and executive chairman of IT Governance, said: “Financial services and insurance entities should prepare now. The new law presents challenges for most organizations, and will require a complete assessment of both operational and technical systems.”

Moreover, the legislation will require organizations to maintain a cybersecurity program, implement risk assessment controls and an incident response plan, identify vulnerabilities in networks and platforms, encrypt non-public information, conduct penetration testing, and provide regulation cybersecurity awareness training.

Businesses will also be required to hold records, timetables, and information that support the certificate and must be kept for five years for inspection by the department.

The Regulation, which is open for comments until the end of January, exempts organizations with fewer than 10 employees, and that have had less than $5 million in revenue over the last three years. The proposed legislation also exempts organizations with assets that do not exceed $10 million.

IT Governance urges financial organizations to take action and begin preparations now, as implementation will be particularly challenging due to the many compliance deadlines, which range between six months and two years.

“As information security practitioners, we encourage organizations to implement an ISO 27001-compliant ISMS (information security management system) as a best-practice path to achieving compliance with the Regulation. Organizations certified to ISO 27001 can demonstrate the three pillars of information security – people, processes, and technology – are addressed and that the organization has implemented a management system to achieve cyber resilience and maintain a strong information security posture,” Alan Calder continued.
