AMCD Commends UN Secretary General for Stance on Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon

United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, November 30, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The American Mideast Coalition for Democracy commends United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres for boldly calling for the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon. A new UN report has confirmed that Hezbollah is preventing the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon from operating in Hezbollah-controlled areas. In September, Hezbollah launched rockets against Israel’s defense forces in Northern Israel and the terror group is now preventing the UNIFIL from inspecting the area.

Said Secretary General Guterres, “I call upon the Government of Lebanon to take all actions necessary to ensure the full implementation of the relevant provisions of the Taif Accords and of resolutions 1559 (2004) and 1680 (2006), which require the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon so that there will be no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than those of the Lebanese State.”

“The Lebanese government must disarm Hezbollah or it will never regain full sovereignty over its territory,” said AMCD co-chair, John Hajjar. “Unfortunately, the government may not be strong enough to accomplish this alone and the UN peacekeeping force does not have the mandate to help with that mission. The UNIFIL was tasked with keeping the peace between Lebanon and Israel after the Lebanese government was supposed to have disarmed this terrorist organization. Unfortunately, Hezbollah never disarmed and so Iran now has control of vast swathes of Southern Lebanon.”

“No country can survive in the long-run with a foreign terrorist organization operating freely within its territory,” added AMCD co-chair, Tom Harb. “Iran has poured millions of dollars into Lebanon, employing Hezbollah fighters and supplying them with advanced weapons, including the rockets they fire into Israel. If Lebanon is to survive, its national armed forces must be strengthened while Iran’s forces are diminished.”

“We applaud President Trump for applying strong sanctions against Iran,” said AMCD vice-chair, Hossein Khorram. “The people of Iran are rising up in protest against their nation’s limited resources being lavished on terrorist groups in foreign countries. They’re tired of sacrificing for the mullah’s foreign adventures. They want to turn toward positive goals of national development and away from the mullahs’ obsession with destroying Israel.”

The Political Animal: Wayne Pacelle: Congress and President Say Cruelty Is Abhorrent, Illegal

President Trump shaking hands with Animal Wellness Action's Executive Director Marty Irby at last night's signing ceremony in the Oval Office

President Trump shaking hands with Animal Wellness Action’s Executive Director Marty Irby at last night’s signing ceremony in the Oval Office

It's Their Capacity to Suffer, and Their Value to Us, That Warrants Proscriptions Against Abuse

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, November 29, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — By Wayne Pacelle

It was a fitting juxtaposition.

At the White House this week, President Trump honored Conan, the elite military dog who chased down the world’s most wanted terrorist, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in his fortified Syrian hide-away.

Just hours later, The President signed into law the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, which establishes, for the first time, a national anti-cruelty statute. My colleague Marty Irby was on hand in the Oval Office for the signing ceremony.

Animals don’t need to exhibit this kind of high-risk heroism to warrant our protective instincts. But the actions of Conan are a vivid reminder that animals give so much to us, even risking their lives for our national security. Dogs and other animals serve in the military, but they also are on the front lines with our law enforcement officers in our communities every day. They assist individuals with physical challenges and they provide love and companionship to tens of millions of us. They are part of our social network, cherished member of our families, and wellsprings of joy for us with their antics, their pleadings, and their affections. There’s so much there.

The very least we can do for the whole lot of them is shield them from the aggressions of malicious people. Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and so many other animals are sensate. They have lives that matter to them. Their capacity to suffer is all that’s needed to warrant our empathy and our action.

It was five years ago that I thought it was overdue for our nation to have a federal anti-cruelty statute to complement state laws against abuse. It was then that I asked Senators Pat Toomey, R-Penn., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. and Reps. Lamar Smith, R-Texas and Ted Deutch, D-Fla., to consider leading this legislative effort. A couple of other lawmakers stood in the way, successfully holding up the measure for two entire Congresses. But these humane-minded lawmakers – and Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla, who replaced Smith as a leader after the Texan retired – attracted the support first of dozens and then ultimately hundreds of their colleagues. So many of them had heard from tens of thousands of caring people like you who wrote and called and demanded that the PACT Act be passed. As Senator Toomey told me at one bleak moment when a few stonewalling lawmakers had won the day, it would be just a matter of time before the battle turned in our favor.

This week was that week.

The federal measure, building on a 2010 statute that bars the sale of videos showing illegal acts of animal cruelty, would make it a federal crime to torture an animal in cases where acts of intentional cruelty affect interstate or foreign commerce, on federal property, or “in the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States.” It also makes it a federal crime to engage in sexual exploitation of animals; Hawaii, New Mexico, West Virginia and Wyoming have no laws banning bestiality.

This week President Trump – with encouragement from Lara Trump, his daughter-in-law and animal advocate Blair Brandt — put a capstone on our nation’s legal framework against animal cruelty. Another stone will be added when our animal fighting law takes full effect in about three weeks. That law, with its implementation delay a year from its 2018 passage, would apply all federal prohibitions against staged animal fighting to every part of the United States, including the territories. There’s no longer ambiguity about its reach and effect because a U.S. District Court in Puerto Rico just affirmed that the law does in fact ban cockfighting in all five U.S. territories, none of which ban cockfighting under their territorial laws.

Criminalizing the most gratuitous forms of abuse is an antecedent to ending more carefully defended forms of cruelty. No nation can hope to confront factory farming, animal testing, trophy hunting, the fur trade, and other severe forms of institutional animal exploitation – with their phalanx of enthusiasts, business owners, and state apologists – without first taking care of the cruelty in our backyards. When that kind of cruelty rightly earns our broad social disapproval, it’s not a major leap to call out cruelty in its other hiding places, including in the realms of sport, agriculture, science, or fashion.

Former Employees of Tyler Technologies File Complaint for Unpaid Overtime

Tyler Technologies faces allegations of violating federal labor law by misclassifying certain employees as salaried and exempt from overtime wages

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, November 27, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — On November 20, 2019, a former employee (Plaintiff) of Tyler Technologies (“Tyler”) filed a class and collective action lawsuit (3:19-cv-07647) against the company to recover unpaid overtime wages. Tyler is a corporation that specializes in creating software solutions and providing related services to the public sector.

Plaintiff and other similarly-situated employees worked as Implementation Consultants and Implementation Coordinators (“Implementation Reps”) for Tyler and were all paid a salary. Plaintiff alleges that Tyler violated the wage and hour provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”) by intentionally misclassifying him and other Implementation Reps as salaried employees and as a result, were denied overtime wages. Plaintiff alleges that he and other Implementation Reps routinely worked more than forty (40) hours per week without receiving “time-and-a-half” their regular rate of pay for all hours worked over forty (40) in a workweek.

Plaintiff’s attorney Benjamin L. Davis, III of the Law Offices of Peter T. Nicholl explains, “when employees are not actually performing administrative work at a level which would qualify them for an exemption under the law, they should be paid overtime premiums for working over forty (40) hours a week.”

According to the Complaint, Plaintiff and other Implementation Reps were primarily responsible for providing Defendant’s clients with basic support in regard to the implementation of their software. It is alleged that Plaintiff and other Implementation Reps were given a voluminous amount of work that required them to work overtime regularly, despite not being properly compensated for their additional time.

Additional information regarding how other salaried Implementation Reps who work or worked for Tyler can join this case can be found here or by calling the Law Offices of Peter T. Nicholl at 410-244-7005. The case is entitled Kudatskky, et al. v. Tyler Technologies (Northern District of California).

The Law Offices of Peter T. Nicholl and Nichols Kaster, LLP represent the Plaintiff in this matter. Both firms are recognized as leaders in the field of wage and hour litigation and have successfully handled numerous class and collective action lawsuits across the country. They are committed to vigorously representing employees whose rights have been violated.

President Trump Signs Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, First National Anti-Cruelty Law

President Trump shaking hands with Animal Wellness Action’s Executive Director Marty Irby at last night’s signing ceremony in the Oval Office

With today’s act, we take the critical step toward being more responsible and humane stewards of our planet and all who we want to cherish and take care of, and all of those who live on it.”

— President Donald J. Trump

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, November 26, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last night, President Donald J. Trump signed the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, H.R. 724, into law. The bill, led by U.S. Sens. Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and U.S. Reps. Ted Deutch (D-FL) and Vern Buchanan (R-FL) passed the House and Senate in recent weeks without dissent The PACT Act establishes the first federal anti-cruelty law in American history.

Animal Wellness Action’s executive director, Marty Irby; attended the signing ceremony in the Oval Office this afternoon along with U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan.

"We have a responsibility to honor the dignity of God’s creation," said President Donald J. Trump. "With today’s act, we take the critical step toward being more responsible and humane stewards of our planet and all who we want to cherish and take care of, and all of those who live on it."

“We’re thrilled to see the first anti-cruelty statute in American history signed into law and applaud President Trump and the Congress for providing the voiceless with a level of protection never seen before,” said Marty Irby, executive director at Animal Wellness Action. “The PACT Act will allow federal authorities to crack down on the most egregious of animal abusers and help keep American pets safe from harm.”

“It is the mark of a civilized nation to establish a bright-line legal standard against malicious mistreatment of animals,” said Wayne Pacelle, founder of Animal Wellness Action who developed the original concept of the PACT Act five years ago. “Today we fortified the legal framework against animal abuse in a foundational way.”

“While Congress is gridlocked on so many issues, there is one issue of consensus: that animals deserve protection from malicious abuse; the PACT Act lays a strong foundation to better protect some of the most vulnerable among us,” said Holly Gann, Director of federal affairs at the Animal Wellness Foundation.

“For many Americans, their pets are a part of the family — that’s been true in my house and that’s why the signing of this bill today is such an important milestone,” said U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL). “I want to thank all of the animal welfare groups who worked so hard to help get this bill passed and signed into law.”

The PACT Act would prohibit extreme acts of cruelty when they occur in interstate commerce or on federal property and cracks down on widespread sexual abuse of animals (bestiality). While current federal law bans the sale of videos showing illegal acts of cruelty, it does not prohibit the underlying conduct. Law enforcement agencies across the country, the National Sheriffs’ Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Animal Wellness National Law Enforcement Council, have endorsed the PACT Act because of the well-documented connection between animal cruelty and violence against people.

The bill obtained a tremendous showing of support with 302 cosponsors in the House and 41 in the Senate. The Senate bill previously passed the Senate by unanimous consent in the 114th and 115th Congress, but it was blocked in the House at that time by former House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) despite the overwhelming bipartisan support.

Animal Wellness Action (Action) is a Washington, D.C.-based 501(c)(4) organization with a mission of helping animals by promoting legal standards forbidding cruelty. We champion causes that alleviate the suffering of companion animals, farm animals, and wildlife. We advocate for policies to stop dogfighting and cockfighting and other forms of malicious cruelty and to confront factory farming and other systemic forms of animal exploitation. To prevent cruelty, we promote enacting good public policies and we work to enforce those policies. To enact good laws, we must elect good lawmakers, and that’s why we remind voters which candidates care about our issues and which ones don’t. We believe helping animals helps us all.

The Animal Wellness Foundation (Foundation) is a Los Angeles-based private charitable organization with a mission of helping animals by making veterinary care available to everyone with a pet, regardless of economic ability. We organize rescue efforts and medical services for dogs and cats in need and help homeless pets find a loving caregiver. We are advocates for getting veterinarians to the front lines of the animal welfare movement; promoting responsible pet ownership; and vaccinating animals against infectious diseases such as distemper. We also support policies that prevent animal cruelty and that alleviate suffering. We believe helping animals helps us all.

LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF CALIFORNIA WANTS TO STOP THE CRIMINALIZATION OF POVERTY AND HOMELESSNESS

It’s time to take a different approach that will help those in need while maintaining the rights of property owners not to have their homes and businesses disrupted by tent cities.”

— Mimi Robson, Chair of the Libertarian Party of California

SACRAMENTO, CA, USA, November 26, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Libertarian Party of California (LPC) believes government policy frequently takes aim at the problem of homelessness, but too often suppresses voluntary localized efforts to address the issue, depriving people of support that would otherwise exist. Government should not impose rules that penalize poverty and homelessness, while simultaneously criminalizing voluntary efforts of assistance.

Mimi Robson, Chair of the Libertarian Party of California said, “With Thanksgiving upon us homelessness is in the news with people gnashing their teeth about what ‘government’ should do to solve this problem; unfortunately, they continue to do nothing for the marginalized homeless population. It’s time to take a different approach that will help those in need while maintaining the rights of property owners not to have their homes and businesses disrupted by tent cities.”
The LPC supports community efforts such as providing need-based short or long-term shelter, training in useful skills and crafts, personal hygiene, nutrition and wellness, addiction recovery, psychiatric services, and other beneficial programs by individuals and private institutions. Instead of spending billions of dollars on expensive building projects that are narrowly focused and not helping those truly in need, governments should support mutual aid and community programs. We propose the following to support the most vulnerable members of our communities, and remove obstacles in creating affordable housing for all:
• Reforming laws and regulations to eliminate unnecessary restrictions, taxes, penalties and costs of assisting the homeless (e.g., home and meal sharing, micro-businesses and tiny homes)
• Similarly reducing and eliminating restrictions on the use of private property for shared or short-term tenancies (including restrictions on subletting, Airbnb, etc.), and restrictions on construction of new housing units including eliminating unneeded zoning laws that prevent the construction of low-income housing
• Reforming police training and procedures towards guiding the homeless to sources of support in their local communities while still allowing enforcement of laws protecting public health such as laws regarding public defecation
• Donating or below-market leasing of state held lands for the benefit of our communities for developing accessible housing projects to help get people off the streets with projects like the 1993 Dome Village in Los Angeles
• Providing tax credits for projects that reduce dependency of the homeless on government services.

"Therapy or Torture: The Truth About Electroshock"—Documentary Calls for ECT Ban

CCHR's latest documentary is a wake-up call to protect 100,000 people, including children, pregnant women and the elderly from electroshock treatment.

This is an atrocity, and the FDA does nothing. They need to be held accountable while governments override them and ban electroshock in mental health practice.”

— Jan Eastgate, international president of CCHR

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, November 25, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) International’s latest documentary, “Therapy or Torture: The Truth about Electroshock” aired on the Scientology TV Network over the weekend and is now part of a series of compelling award-winning CCHR documentaries available on the station. Electroshock, also known as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), is the passage of up to 460 volts of electricity sent through the brain causing a grand mal seizure. Psychiatrists admit they don’t how it “works” and that it cannot cure, but 100,000 Americans and over 1 million worldwide are administered it every year. The documentary flanks CCHR’s campaign to have ECT banned as outmoded and dangerous. An online petition has nearly 110,000 supporters. Sign here.

Craig Newnes, a clinical psychologist and author of A Critical A-Z of Electroshock!, is one of many experts interviewed for the documentary. He calls the treatment “electrocution. That’s all it is. They don’t call it electrocution; they call it Electroconvulsive Therapy because it has a magic three letter acronym, E-C-T. And one thing it isn’t is a therapy.”

He further states: “The outcome of that is it destroys brain cells. And the more brain cells you destroy, in theory, the better it is for the person. The biggest mystery of all is why on earth people think that putting bolts of electricity through people’s heads is a good idea.”

Jonathon Emord, a constitutional attorney who is challenging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over its classification of the ECT devices, says ECT “is ultimately imparting large amounts of electricity, many times the voltage you would get even if you stuck your finger into a light socket.” The mental health industry doesn’t “deny that there are disadvantages to ECT,” but “they minimize them. It’s a sales pitch.”

Some of that pitch is that anesthetics and muscle relaxants now given before ECT is administered, lessens the risk of breaking bones and trauma. But Fred Shaw, an international spokesperson for CCHR and former law enforcement officer said, “If you are awake and get hit with a baseball bat, it’s obvious that you would feel a lot of pain. But if you’re unconscious and get hit with a baseball bat, your body goes through that same trauma. So why are psychiatrists arguing that the body doesn’t go through trauma just because somebody’s unconscious? It’s assault and battery.”

Dr. Genevieve King, a physician, explains in “Therapy or Torture”: “The more seizures a person has, the more potential there is for cognitive decline, different neurologic dysfunctions and more and more seizures.” Adds neurologist Dr. Ken Sharlin: “Having recurrent seizures potentially reduces the life span of that individual. It has an impact on mortality.” He observed ECT being administered during his medical training, thinking even then, it was “barbarian.” He says: “I thought it was truly one of the most obnoxious things I’d ever seen done to a human being. A huge percentage of these people have brain damage.”

The documentary includes archival and current footage of ECT being given with patient testimony from electroshock survivors, including:

• “I went through a neurocognitive testing six months after and I lost approximately about 50 points of IQ”;
• “I didn’t remember my name, I didn’t remember anything. I didn’t remember what happened the day before. I didn’t remember anything at all”; and
• “I was pretty much tortured. I was being forced to have this treatment. I didn’t like it, I didn’t want it. And when I was honest with the doctors about how it affected me and I told them, they just interpreted that as part of my depression…. What was done to me was really, frankly, evil.”

Manfred Nowak, a former U.N Special Rapporteur is interviewed, stating: “Against-your-will electroshock therapy is in my opinion absolutely prohibited” and constitutes “torture.” A July 2018 U.N. Human Rights Council report called on governments to recognize that forced psychiatric treatment, including ECT, are “practices constituting torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment….”[1]

In 1976, California was the first State to recognize the dangers of electroshock—and prohibited its use on children under the age of 12. More than 40 years later, the FDA has failed to ensure clinical trials prove that ECT devices are safe and effective. Yet, in October, 2018, the manufacturer of one ECT device warned of “permanent brain damage” is a potential risk.[2] This followed a California lawsuit which had recently settled. The attorney representing the plaintiffs in that case wrote: “the United States District Court for the Central District of California ruled that there was sufficient evidence for a reasonable jury to find that the prominent manufacturer of ECT devices…caused brain injury in the plaintiffs by failing to warn their treating physicians of the risk of brain injury associated with ECT.”[3]

Jan Eastgate, international president of CCHR, who has documented hundreds of cases of ECT damage, says: “This is an atrocity, and the FDA does nothing. They need to be held accountable while governments override them and ban electroshock in mental health practice.” She urges ECT survivors and their families to report electroshock abuse to CCHR.

CCHR, the mental health industry watchdog, was established by the Church of Scientology and renowned professor of psychiatry and author, Dr. Thomas Szasz in 1969 to investigate and expose abuses in the mental health system. L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, first brought psychiatric imprisonment to wide public notice: “Thousands and thousands are seized without process of law, every week, over the ‘free world’ tortured, castrated, killed. All in the name of ‘mental health,’” he wrote in March 1969. For more information visit www.cchrflorida.org.

We’re thrilled to see the first anti-cruelty statute in American history signed into law and applaud President Trump for providing the voiceless with a level of protection never seen before.”

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, November 25, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Today, President Donald J.
