Palestinian Columbia Student Challenges Deportation Ruling in US Court
According to reports, Mahdawi is taking his case to the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit after the Board of Immigration Appeals upheld a decision allowing deportation proceedings against him to move forward. While immigration judges cleared the case for continuation in May, a separate federal court process has so far prevented authorities from detaining him again while appeals are ongoing.
In a statement released by the American Civil Liberties Union, Mahdawi said, "I come from a refugee camp in Palestine, where my family still resides. I know what it means to live without rights, without voice, without safety. America was the first place I ever felt true freedom and dignity.”
The case remains under review as legal challenges continue through the US court system.
