The Supreme Court of Florida issued an administrative order Tuesday making appointments and reappointments to its Supreme Court Committee on Standard Jury Instructions in Civil Cases.
Signed by Chief Justice John D. Couriel, Administrative Order AOSC26-39 outlines the leadership and membership changes set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
Under Florida Rule of General Practice and Judicial Administration 2.270, the committee is tasked with maintaining up-to-date standard jury instructions for civil suits through continuous review of state statutes and court rulings.
Attorneys J. Clancy Bounds of Maitland, Michael Brownlee of Orlando, and Daniel Rock of Coral Gables were reappointed to serve second three-year terms running through December 31, 2029.
Two new members were appointed for initial three-year terms ending December 31, 2029: Fort Lauderdale attorney Melissa Johnson and Pensacola attorney John Rogers.
The order also granted term exceptions for two returning members. Nichole J. Segal, a West Palm Beach attorney, received a one-year reappointment expiring December 31, 2027. Second District Court of Appeal Judge Andrea Smith was reappointed to a third three-year term running through December 31, 2029.
While Florida Rule 2.270(d)(1)(B)(i) generally caps service at two terms, Chief Justice Couriel noted in the order that exceeding the limit for Segal and Smith was “determined to be in the best interest of the Committee.”
Segal will serve as the committee’s chair through December 31, 2027, with Stephanie Miles serving alongside her as vice chair during the same period.
