Western Cape Government and SAPS to launch “Lawyers in Police Stations Project” in Mitchells Plain
On Tuesday, 18 August 2026, Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde and provincial Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, will officially launch the “Lawyers in Police Stations Project” in the Mitchells Plain Policing Precinct.
The Premier and Minister will be joined by senior South African Police Service officials as well as representatives of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC).
This is a collaborative initiative between the provincial Government, SAPS and GI-TOC aimed at strengthening the criminal justice system by deploying legal practitioners full-time within police stations. There, they mentor officers on statement-taking, charge formulation and evidence management.
The initiative, which was piloted at the Grassy Park SAPS station, provides dedicated legal support that assists victims, witnesses, and investigating officers to navigate complex criminal justice processes.
