JUDGE SANDY SAULS, WHO RULED IN 2000 PRESIDENTIAL RECOUNT, DIES AT 85

Norman "Sandy" Sanders Sauls, the circuit judge whose Tallahassee courtroom became the focal point of the disputed 2000 presidential election, died Aug. 29. He was 85.

Sauls' ruling against Vice President Al Gore's recount challenge helped shape one of the most consequential legal battles in American history. He grew up in Monticello, spoke in a Panhandle drawl and was known for his strict control of the courtroom.
